Theban Chat Room is working

The Theban Chat room is working again.

The Theban alphabet is a writing system, in particular a substitution cipher of the Latin alphabet used by early modern occultists and popular in the Wicca movement. Theban is used as a writing system, and it can be used as a substitute for the common ABCDEF Latin alphabet. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (1486–1535) included it in his De Occulta Philosophia,… Read more 0 comments

Did a site software update today. It broke a few things, but I'm working on fixing those. namely, the PaganRadio.Org player is missing because of a change in the return value of a script. Working on that.

*EDIT*

So, I'm still working on the issue, but until I have a solid solution, the Pagan Radio Player will default to autoplay.

Okay, admit it. You had them. They had you shivering under the covers in the middle of summer.

Everyone has had childhood fears.

One of mine was the Moon. I was absolutely petrified to see that Moon because everyone told me there was a man in it and all I saw was a face with expressions of shocked terror. I thought, "I don't know what they did to the poor man-in-the-Moon, but if that face tellsRead more 2 comments

To many people outside the Wiccan and Pagan community ( most of the world I suppose) we are evil/weird/odd/crazy/in need of saving.
Something important that I feel the need to point out to the world at large:
We all know that social media is the sewer of the internet. A quicksand pit of negativity, anger and insults.
Except on witchchat and other Pagan sites like it. Read up, world. Here we share only positivity.

What’s Your Daily Practice Like?

If I'm going to do something daily I have to make it easy to get to and no fancy prep-work or anything to get in the way.  So my mediation is something easy and short. Practice takes vigilance and being aware of energies.  Any time I'm standing in line at a check-out is a good time for  grounding and centering.

i look at daily activities & just think of ways to playfully feel energies as they occur. This way I'm teaching myself to be more aware. Everything is a workshop for energy sensitivity. Vigilance and awareness. It all contributes building awareness. I was once told by a delightfull witch, who taught me about circles and things, to be ever aware of my energy.

I light a candle every day to greet the Lady, use prayer beads for 10–30 minutes daily meditation, jot things in my journal while I drink my coffee that I stir with a blessing (when I think of it), greet the earth when I walk outside barefoot (the better to feel the Earth),  sit outside in moon light if it's a clear night, leave dry catfood & water outside for the raccoons, opossum & strays, & put out birdseed for the birds, peanuts for the squirrels. They also like Doritos & glazed doughnuts. To me it's a thanks offering to Nature. I occasionally talk to my roses 🌹. I don't observe Wicca as a religion but as a spiritual practice.

I'm always looking for new ideas, so what do you do that you'd like to share?

Appropriate Category?

A lot of traditions employ ancient orthographies and languages, whether through power names, grimoires, or other occult applications from antiquity. The most common appear to be Latin, Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic.  Some of these orthographies are presented on this site.

The problem is that many people trying to derive a name for this or that simply throw out words from a lexicon without any concern about whether the usage of that word is correct or if the form of a word is appropriate in that application.

Would it be appropriate to post tips on grammar and syntax for these languages, and if so, where?

Please advise. Read more

What is Wiccan Magic?

What is Wiccan Magic
by Bunnyrabbit

This is a topic that I've seen titling books, Facebook groups and even on websites as well for some time now. What is interesting is that there is no specific thing called Wiccan Magic that is truly different from other magics. First let’s look at the definition of magic. It is "the manipulation of energies for a wanted and/or needed change". Another definition is “The science and art of causing change to occur in conformity to will.” Both definitions talk of manipulation. These definitions apply to all forms of magic. There are no exceptions to it. So, what do people mean when they say, "Wiccan magic"? Are they implying that there are magical spells that only Wiccans do? Are they implying that there are magical spells that Wiccans can’t do? I'm not sure.

So let’s look at where this energy we use in magic comes from? It is known that all physical matter is made of energy; the living as well as the non-living. Energy also exists on its own without any physical matter at all. What we also must understand is that this energy can also come from the Deities but that’s not like saying that the Deities creates this energy. Remember that energy cannot be created or destroyed though it can change form. It can be released from physical matter or put into physical matter; it can be gathered from that which is around you; it can be used and sent forth; but you can’t destroy it and you can’t create it.

It is known that all matter radiates this energy. You can see it in the form of an aura. This aura differs from one object to another because of the fact that each object vibrates at a different frequency thus making each object different. In other words, each object, living or non-living, has its own energy signature. Some people can see auras or feel the energy field around an object, however, anyone can learn to see and/or feel the energy in an object and anyone can utilize it in a magical spell working.

Something else that we need to remember about magic is that it starts and ends with the mind. Without the mind we wouldn’t have magic. What I mean is that we have to focus our minds on the end goal, or intent, to make the magic work. And we have to think and focus that goal to the finished product to get what we actually want. In other word, if you wish to get a job you don’t just envision you filling out a job application. You see yourself actually getting and doing that job you wish to get. Thus, you envision the whole process of filling out the application, having a successful interview and then getting the job and doing well at it. So you see that the process not only starts with your mind, your thought of your intent, but also the end result is also in your mind. This includes the fact that you need to believe in the magic. Belief is as important as the focus of your mind. So believe in yourself and in what you are doing. Believe that you are a worthy person to receive the magic. Magic isn’t a fly-by-night adventure, it’s serious business. Also remember that you have to follow up each magical spell with actual mundane action. In other words, if you are doing an employment spell then you have to get off your butt and fill out those applications and make those phone calls and go to the interviews properly prepared. Magic doesn’t create out of nothing. Back it up with mundane action as well.

So magic begins and ends within our minds. When we focus on what we want to happen and we believe that it will happen then it will happen if it is allowed by the Universe, Deities, Spirits, whatever or Whoever you believe the Powers to be. The tools, candles, herbs, stones and colors that we use can be used to help us focus on our intend and they of course contribute to the energies we use. But they are not necessary to doing magic, however helpful many find them to be. Most Witches use them though as they make it easier to do their magic.

Now, let’s take a closer look at what others may mean when they say, “Wiccan magic”. First off magic is magic. Whether you are Wiccan, Pagan, Traditional Witch, Hoodoo, Voodun or whatever. What might be different is your method and type of magic that you do and this is basically governed by your personal ethics. Now I'm not placing any judgment on anyone's personal ethics. It is, as I said, personal and it isn't my place to tell you what your ethics should be. But I will state what the ethics of a Wiccan usually is. Wicca is generally governed by three basic principles: The Wicca Rede, The Three-Fold Law, and the concept of Free Will. However, not all Wiccans follow these principles. Others may follow some of or all of these principles but that's their personal choice.

Next is what or how does these principles effect Wiccans in their choices of the spell work that they do? Let’s first take a brief look at what these principles mean to Wiccans. The Wiccan Rede basically states, "An it harms none, do what ye will". This doesn't mean do absolutely no harm. It really means to do as little harm as possible because, quite frankly, to live is to do harm. It's as simple as that. The Three-Fold Law or as some call it The Law of Return basically means that everything we do will come back to you three times what you sent out. And then there is the principle that everyone has Free Will. That people have the right to choose to not be magically manipulated into doing something or having something done to them or for them that is against their personal wants or ethics.

So how, for Wiccans, are these principles applied to magic? Basically, it means that by following these Wiccan Ethics the Wiccan carefully choose the methods and types of spells that they will do. They might do a love spell but they wouldn’t do one that targets a specific person into loving them or someone else. Wiccans would do a general love spell that would bring love to them or they might want to do a spell on themselves to learn more fully how to love themselves or others. Wiccans would on general principle not do any spell that would knowingly cause the death of any animal or person or was environmentally unsound. That means that they wouldn't do a spell where an animal is used in sacrifice as part of the spell working. And many Wiccans avoid doing any spell that requires parts of animals as ingredients for the spell work as well. And of course, the Wiccan avoids doing anything that might come back to them in a way they wouldn't like. Those of other paths will have their own set of ethics and ways they practice magic. This doesn’t mean that they can’t do the same spells that a Wiccan would do though.

One restriction I would put on spell workings is to never do a spell when you are angry or upset or even when depressed and especially when under the influence of drugs or alcohol that is manipulating your general perceptions of reality. These emotions and drugs and/or alcohol can affect your spell workings in a harmful way. If you are angry then that anger will be transmitted through your spell working to the object of your intent and you might later realize that you didn’t truly intend for things to turn out the way they did. Anger is a very powerful emotion and should be avoided when doing magic. This is why I suggest that when you choose to do a spell that you write it all out and then set it aside for a bit, an hour or even a day. This way you can settle your emotions and approach the spell in a calm manner. You certainly don’t want to cast a curse unintentionally and then reap the consequences of that action, not to mention the harm you may have caused with that spell.

Also magic cannot be used to force nature to do what we want. It is not supernatural but a natural movement of energies to make needed and/or wanted change. If it is possible for something to happen within the scope of nature, then, it can be made to happen through magic. So, if you want to change the color of your hair, then go to the drug store and get a box of hair dye and do it the mundane way or see a professional.

One more item to address is that there is no such thing as black magic or white magic. Magic is neutral. It is neither good nor bad. It is governed by how a person uses magic, in other words, their intent, is what makes it good or bad. So, it’s not actually the magic that is good or bad but the person’s intent. Many spells that may look good or bad can be used for either purpose. It all depends on how a person directs it. Thus, don’t blame the magic but the person who did it. Also, the terms Black and White magic has racial connotations that may not be intended and has in the past actually been used in a derogatory way. We don’t need that in any magical practice.

Also, the terms of positive and negative when talking about energy and magic should not be used to designate good and bad. Positive and negative, especially when talking about energies but with magic as well, are simply the polarities of that said energy. Remember that in magic positive energies draws things to you and that negative energies pushes things away from you. Thus, a healing spell can be either positive or negative. You can either pull health to the person or you can push illness away from them.

So, is there such a thing as Wiccan Magic? Not really. There is simply spell workings that a Wiccan will do and certain spell workings that a Wiccan tends to not do. And any magic that a Wiccan does anyone can do. It isn't the exclusive possession of Wicca. Just like any magic or spell working that others of other paths do are not exclusive to them. Magic is magic and available to all those who wish to practice it.
