Recently we've been talking about the history of Witchcraft. I'd like to ask a question here that I hope everyone will try to answer. If you're not sure of the answer, that's okay...none of us are...but maybe give it a shot anyway. Here goes:

What's the difference between Witchcraft and Wicca?

I believe Wicca has a more religious structure to it. And Witchcraft is more freeform if you will.

I think Wicca is more the mental and spiritual side and follows a path of purpose vs witchcraft which is done with purpose or intent. Wicca to me is working on ourselves mind, body, and spirit focusing internally and then pushing that out into the universe in a positive way to make the world a better place. Maybe the best way for me to describe it is that when I make a charm it is usually to protect (or prevent) something from happening. And Witchcraft is used to cause (or make) something happen. If you want something (a new job, love, money) I think we look to witchcraft to create that possibility and from what I read it seems witchcraft can go much darker in that there are spells that can be used to harm others vs help others. Not to say that Wicca limits the ability to do those things, but with Wicca there is an understanding that everything you put out there should be done with a positive intent and there are consequences if that line is crossed.

Wicca is a religion (established officially in 1954 if my memory is working right).

Witchcraft is a practice, and largely undefined by religion.

Hmm, all that’s already been said plus witchcraft presumably stems back to the indigenous shamanic roots of human experience as an "art of influencing circumstances" and Wicca is a 20th Century construction intended to give a common structure to independent groups.
